Espresso Stand Owner Gets in on the Pastie Craze

If you love long brown hair and pasties, Java Joint off Ridgetop Boulevard in Silverdale is the place to get your coffee.

Yes, Silverdale has become home to one of the “sexpresso” stands that have stirred up customers and complaints across Kitsap lately.

But this time there’s a catch.

Sporting red, sparkly star “pasties” on his bare chest Wednesday was stand owner Don Frossard. That’s spelled D-o-n, not D-a-w-n.

The longtime owner of Java Joint decided last week it was time to have a little fun with the recent media attention focused on drive-through coffee houses in Belfair and Bremerton that boast baristas in skimpy outfits or less.

“For weeks now people have been asking me, where are the pasties?” he said in reference to the adhesives that young women at some stands wear wearing while tending their drive-thrus.

Hmmm... I think Kitsap County citizens need to focus on more important issues. Everyone has worn bathing suits in front of other people before. I mean, if your going to complain about barista's in bathing suits, then you better complain about lifeguards wearing suits to. Another thing.. if people can't handle seeing baristas in bathing suits then they should go somewhere else to buy their coffee. I mean, last I checked we did live in a country where we are allowed to make our own choices...

ladyjoe9876,
We're not talking about "bathing suits" in these conversations about baristas and their clothing.

I've not checked into it myself, but I suspect that the swimsuits available at Macy's or Nordstrom's do not feature pasties. At least, the pasties would be fastened together with a bit of ribbon and there might even be a strap or two.

This guy has a great sense of humor!

Nice try buddy, maybe your stunt will work better in rainbow land. For now, i will stick to the female variety in Belfair... BTW, I am glad that the Kitsap Sun thinks that this is "fun."

If someone is going to spend $4-$5 for a cup of coffee, I think the pasties are covering up too much. Heck, at a STRIP CLUB, for $4-$5 for a cup of soda, you can see, smell, feel, and sometimes taste!

Next, they are going to want to shut down places like Hooters. Then where would all the OLD MEN go to eat their chicken wings.

Don is PROBABLY the longest running PRIVATE OWNER LATTE stand in the STATE! Glad to see him have some fun, of course the 80 degree weather does help. I hope those of you who do DRiVE Through, get your coffee hairless!

Java Joint is an awesome coffee stand, excellent service and friendly folks. Don runs a fine shop; he even treats our dog with respect. Nice Pasties Don, real cute. You folks that are so offended by a little semi-nudity need to take a trip to Europe and develop the attitude towards nudity and sex that they have. It's laid back, no biggie, probably why they do not have anywhere near (per capita) the rapes and other sex related crimes that we do. BTW: I had a topless haircut while in Europe, it was pretty cool.

Sick, naked old guy on front page, time to boycot Silverdale.

Posted by Tang on August 14, 2008 at 8:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Cean,
Actually when I lived in Florida I did see some "bathing suits" that didn't cover up any more than the pasties do. I guess one tiny strip of cloth just some how makes people feel better about seeing the same thing. The big difference being that the pasties aren't going to move around while the skimmpy suits I have seen might actually move and *gasp* expose someones breast.

I went to the stand in gorst because of all the hoopla that people were making about it. Seemed like they were being unfairly targeted and I wanted to show my support for and in a way to kind of spite those that had their panties all bunched up over this non issue. Turns out they actually make good coffee and I have returned to them several times, most of which with my wife. Prices are comparable, the ladies are friendly, and we have yet to have a bad drink made there. Granted it doesn't hurt that they are quite nice to look at as well.

As far as this guy goes, I love his humor and hope that he does well with his stand. If we happen to be in that neighborhood we might even swing by for a drink ourselves.

I agree with the people that say "If you don't want to see it don't go there". Once all the crime and corruption in the citys and county have been taken care of then we should worry about what a barista is wearing. I have my stand, the women are clothed and the coffee is good. That is all I care about. So lets all laugh and get on with life

Posted by cbmomma2000 on August 14, 2008 at 8:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Funny! I like his sense of humor on the whole “sexpresso” hoopla. I think that some things are taken too seriously. I for one do not go to coffee stands that promote scantly clad women because I do not want to expose my children to it. That is my choice as it should be for others. I don't need a law or big brother to tell me not to go I can police my own morale’s thank you very much. I'll go to Don's stand or I'll stick to Mojo To Go, on National, a family friendly coffee stand where they know my name!

Posted by PanchoVilla on August 14, 2008 at 9:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why is it ok for a man to do this and not a woman?

Why is it funny when a man does it and offensive when a woman does?

Why do people say things like "we're a small community and naughty latte stands are not ok in our small town - but they are OK in bigger cities?"

I enjoy this fellows sense of humor but find the moral bjections to women doing the EXACT SAME THING to be hypocritical.

I dislike the morality police on the city councils in Belfair and Bremerton supposedly looking out for lewd behavoir, but only for women. That smacks of discrimination. Lets just let these businesses run their operations as they see fit and get back to things that really matter.

Posted by Ladyolyte on August 14, 2008 at 9:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

You know, I have to agree with Pancho, let's get our city councils back to important issues. I also agree with billbstock, in Europe this is not an issue. We really do have to stop making moral decisions for our entire society, I for one will not go to a place that offends me, but I still believe they have every right to do so.

Posted by bigjoef on August 14, 2008 at 9:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I dont know why anybody is buying $5 latte's every day when our economy is going down the tube? $140 a month for latte's. I know people who buy 2 a day!! $280 a month! I'm in the wrong business.

Pancho Villa - you wrote "I dislike the morality police on the city councils in Belfair and Bremerton supposedly looking out for lewd behavoir, but only for women. That smacks of discrimination. Lets just let these businesses run their operations as they see fit and get back to things that really matter."

Here is my answer - 1) young girls stripping down to pasties in order to sell coffee is sexist. I wonder where all the feminists are on this issue? Wasn't that what their rallying cry was...women should not be sex objects?

2) I doubt that you would go to a coffee stand that had middle aged women donning pasties...and I find that a semi naked man wearing pasties at a drive through is pretty gross...don't care what his sense of humor is!

Resorting to undress in order to sell coffee is pretty sad. It teaches women that their bodies are something that should be leered at...not something that is sacred, as all of our bodies are.

So - feminists ... where are you?

You know, KOMO 4 news has a great lead story this morning with a picture on their website regarding a heroic 13 year old boy named Gabe, from Bremerton, who caught a 6 year old girl who was dangling and then fell from a 3rd story window.

The Kitsap Sun on the other hand has this lead story, which has be covered from every possible angle already. If I want to see a middle aged pale guy without a shirt on who is slightly out of shape, I don't need to pick up the morning paper, I can just go pull back the bedcovers from over my husband and take a look anytime I want. Come on guys.... Where is the story on Gabe?

Such double standards! I haven't seen the Sun show pictures or video of the young ladies sporting pastie's. Don however is showcased bouncing his man boobs for the camera. To really make it comparable with what is going on at the other stands he would need to be anywhere between 17 to 25, hot, fit, flirty and be sporting a tight thong type bananna sling. But don't worry soon enough this type of stuff will be seen everywhere. YUCK!

chimakuni, many would agree that the body is a temple but they don't think they have to cover it up. Others perspetive as to what it teaches people are likely quite different than yours.
I also don't see it as sad at all, in fact I see it as liberating. My point being is you are entitled to your opinion and you can act or not act on that opinion by not going to this place. However it appears that if you had your way the stand wouldn't be able to operate.

I also agree with both Punkinhead and catinthehat on this being a refreshing break from the depressing news.

Posted by Civil_E on August 14, 2008 at 1:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't want my young impressionable children exposed to either women in pasties (or middle aged men either for that matter.) They have been taught about sex, in all its many forms. But they have also been taught to respect their bodies and have a sense of decency. Obviously the people working in the espresso stands are not concealed from public view. As long as it is behind closed doors, they can feel free to do as they please, and if customers want to be served by them, it is their choice.

Whatever happened to the Health Codes requiring shirts and shoes? I believe they are still in force.

As far as hooters, those gals wear tight t-shirts and shorts, not bikinis.

It's a JOKE! Don was making fun of it...He was taking something that people were getting upset about and making light of it...I even lightened up on my views when I saw him in the drivethrough...I asked if I could take a pic and he said "SURE!" He's not TRYING to compare with the bare baristas.

It's a JOKE dudette...and only a JOKE! Revel in the humor instead of trying to find something Machiavellian in it. Jeez.

Im think someone should open a stand called tips and tails. Get my drift? Something that caters to women. I wonder how the husbands would like it if they saw their wives cars waiting in line. For some reason I think many would not find it very amusing. Such a double standard.

Posted by chimakuni on August 14, 2008 at 3:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tang - you assume wrong - the business in question is a coffee making business. I am not against businesses or their owners making money.

I think it is in poor taste that the owners feel they must have employees that are semi - nude (as in the women wearing pasties) to sell their wares.

Ceakins - yes, adult women are permitted to work where they wish - and to wear what they wish to wear.

My question was where are the feminist who decried this type of thing in the 60's and 70's?

Chimakuni, I think the feminists from the 60' & 70' are either dead or too old to give a rat's behind about this. Maybe they also realize there are much more urgent issues in the world today. This is just fun and silliness.

Posted by 1MadMomma on August 14, 2008 at 3:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

As I am sure I will be attacked for saying this. I will say it again. My son saw one of the women from one these stands in the window with pastie's on. He is six years old and I wouldn't have known what he saw if it had not been for him saying... Hey, Mom... that ladies naked!! My daughter and her friend were with me one day and they both saw a lady in pastie's walking outside and in front of the stand in pastie's and pantie's. I read an article on a shop on 99 where the owner employed his own 17 year old daughter to work the stand in pastie's. I have a problem with this type of stuff.
PS- have never been there and would never take my kids there.

Posted by Civil_E on August 14, 2008 at 3:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

As I said before, and I will reiterate, this guy is hanging out of the window where all can see. I will not frequent any coffee stand where there are semi-nude servers, on principle. That is not to say that my spouse and I may not go to an adult only revue in Vegas, where it is appropriate. This is not the correct time or place for a peep show.

And, although nudity is commonplace in public beaches in Europe or Brazil, etc., we are in America. If you want to parade around naked in public, go live in Europe. Better yet, go live in the middle east, and try parading around naked. Your heads would roll.

I think some of these people that are supposedly innocently minding their own business should keep their eyes on the road as they drive by instead of trying to see if someone at their local coffee stand may be offending them. As far as Don being topless, LOL, how many men are out there mowing their lawns today without a shirt on? and no pasties at all?

Posted by 1MadMomma on August 14, 2008 at 5:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What I think.... MY eyes were on the road! Children look out of windows and I don't think that is an appropriate view. If this sort of thing were only veiwable by those who wanted to see it. I wouldn't have a problem but I won't tell my kids that they can't look out of a window.

Adding pasties covers more area then topless.

1madmomma, your kid has exceptionally good eye sight if he could see that kind of detail at that range while travelinig at those speeds. My vision is better than 20 20 and I can't see when I'm a passenger and you can better believe I'm trying to. IF they were walking around in front of the stand in pasties and panties I could see you having a complaint but that's not the type of thing I have ever seen them do and I DO go to the stand from time to time. I know we are not talking bathing suits here. I think the pasties are funny. I think Belfair people need to take the stick out of there "you know what" and relax. In fact, it would be funny if everyone walked around the streets in Belfair for a day wearing pasties. Of course it's probably the Belfair women complaining more then men. I think they are afraid that there husbands might get taken away or something. LOL..

1madmomma, I'm sure that number you either KNEW what they were and still chose to continue, or you didn't know until you got to the stand(if ya didnt know beforehand you must be a twit) regardless it was YOU who put your child into the situation to view any of that. Quit pointing fingers and whinging. It's simple to just turn your head and look away. But not for you I guess...it's easier for people like you to complain and whine about something just because YOU don't agree with it. Well...I hope those places are here to stay and I will devote as much time and effort into keeping those places alive...just to annoy YOU and everyone like you. Grow up.

Another thing I might add is that when you drive through Gorst there is no way that you can even see any of the ladies working there...you would have to actually stop to see them. At 40-50 your attention shouldn't be anywhere else but the road anyway.

Dubs....

You post highlights your ignorance. I did not go to the stand. I did drive by going to the base! My children did see what they said they saw. Or else you are calling children liars. That says something about your own maturity level.

1MadMomma..

Why are you focusing so much on a coffee stand? There are so many other places where you see skimpy clothing that show almost everything and yet people don't complain about that. Tell your kids to look the other way if you feel it to be inappropriate. What do you do if you see teenager girls in there skimpy bikini's holding a car wash sign? Do you find that offensive? The coffee girls may be wearing pasties, but they are indoors. If you don't like it, look the other way.. Aren't you an adult living in America?

1MadMomma....your previous post said it was your son, now it's your daughter? Hmnnnnn....driving or not going around that corner I doubt even a child could see anything for goodness sakes...I have been a passenger and haven't seen diddly... and this comment board is for the story listed above, in Silverdale and the ridiculous assumption that Don is hanging out 10 feet from his stand in pasties selling coffee.

Oh for christ's sake!!! Read the posts that you are trying to talk about. If you actually read the post you would have seen that I had said that my 6 year old son saw the lady in the window wearing pasties. My daughter and her friend were with me when they saw the woman out in front of the stand in pasties and panties and I never said a thing about Don hanging out 10 feet from his stand selling coffee in pasties. Don't know who's post your talking about there! Don't know what you see when you go by there but don't try to make it sound like children are lying just to protect your cause. You can have all the man and lady boobs you want with your coffee but it is not appropriate for children. We owe our kids better than this!

1MadMomma..

No I don't expect children to live like adults, but if your raising your child right then you should have them worry about more important issues that are going on in this world. On top of that, you must be driving extremely slow around that coffee stand to be so focused on girls and pasties.. I hate to tell you this, but I'm sure your kids are being exposed to worse at school or when your not even expecting it.
You might not want your kids going to the beach or pool because they might see someone in a bathing suit or bikini.. that might be to much for you.

1madmomma, I'm actually a pretty mature person and calling a child a liar wouldn't be unfitting as children are apt to lie. Although I do believe it is YOU that's lying. As I said in my previous posts you can not see into those windows of those places. They also don't walk out in their pasties and lingerie. When they go outside to smoke or retrieve something from the warehouse they cover themselves up. Please stop making stuff up for your posts. Your arguments are baseless and without merit. As for my posts you say they highlight my ignorance but yet you're the one being ignorant, catch -22 so to speak. Well I'll tell ya what..if you hate the naughty evil bad coffee people so much there is alternative ways to get to base without driving by them so you err..your so called children wont have to be exposed to the real world and you can continue to shelter them as you do yourself. Again I say GROW UP!

Dubs...
Fisrt off I know that I AM not lying and that my children ARE not lying... so kiss off!!! What highlighted your ignorance is that you didn't even read the post you were talking about before you jumped to the attack. Funny how nobody has mentioned my disapproval of the father who owns one of these shops on 99. He employed his 17 year old daughter to work in pasties and panties. You say if I don't like it... don't look or go by there or whatever. My problem is this it is inappropriate for minors. Never thought one of these stands would stoop sooo low but he did and it is legal. This man proved that we can't count on these shops not crossing the line... therefore there needs to be regulations in place. My dear Dubs... It is you who needs to GROW UP!!! I'm not telling you that you can't have your T&A just not in a public forum that can legally serve and hire minors!

ladyjoe9876...

Not going to dispute who's lying with you. I know what my kids saw and I KNOW they are telling the truth about this. At non of the local beaches or pools have I ever seen pasties and panties. Comparing them to swimsuits is like comparing apples to oranges. Besides I didn't get upset over bikini barista's. I got upset over pasties and panties. I wouldn't even be upset about that if it weren't for the fact that minors are allowed and in this state at least one owner has hired a minor to work in pasties and panties. Just because my kids may see and hear worse when I'm not around.. it doesn't make what these stands are doing right.

Posted by Tang on August 16, 2008 at 2:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

OK...just tape some dental floss to the pasties, call them a bikini top and things are good. Because there are suits that cover up the same amount of space.

I don't approve of minors working there, but I think you're flip flopping on the issues.

Flip flopping on what issues?

Posted by dubs on August 16, 2008 at 4:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

you whine about one thing, then whine about another. Then you whine sayin it's ok as long as it meets your standards. Why don't you start by being an able parent and explaining to your kids what they saw. Kids arent stupid and if you talk to them like an adult they will understand. But maybe it's you having trouble understanding them. Look it's just a damn coffee place and this is the wrong article for you to be complaining. You bore me. But as long as I know my comments make you angry then I'm glad I could assist with my services. Now ..for the last time...GROW UP!

Posted by 1MadMomma on August 16, 2008 at 4:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Your comments don't make me angry. I feel sorry for you. You have made yourself look very silly in your posts. I am simply stating my opinion and that is getting you upset. You say you don't approve of minors working in this type of place but you still want them to be allowed to do it. As for explaining to my children... I do... ya know... if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck it's a duck.

Thanks for keeping this going... You make me laugh

umm, you're stupid. My arguments were logical and well thought out. Yours how ever was the mindless banter of a 2 year old, simply put...tripe. Also I never said anything about letting minors work there..I said I dont agree with it that's all. Now you're making up another argument that was non exisistent. You're getting desperate in trying to grasp on to what little argument you have. Also..I'm not the one that got multiple posts from different people about my posts...you did though. So I think it's you making yourself look (silly). Now step away from your (puter) go outside and take a breath of that stuff we call air. You seem like you've gone without it for a while.

1Madmomma..

All I'm trying to get at is that you should focus on more important issues with your kids. You are focusing way to much on these little coffee stands with women and pasties. I'm sure your kids see worse on television. Your kids are sure to see t.v. shows, movies that have sex, fowl language and violence. Why are you so focused on these coffee shops and what these women wear? I think you have to much time on your hand to focus on this one thing.

Posted by 1MadMomma on August 17, 2008 at 10:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You continue to ask me why I focus so much on these little stands. I must ask you why it bothers you so much that this is my pet peeve? Considering that you tell me to focus my energy on more important issues... you could take your own advice. I'm not going to change my mind or my posistion. That's pretty obvious. We can agree to disagree or keep this up. Up to you.

Posted by ladyjoe9876 on August 17, 2008 at 10:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I can really care less about the whole pasties thing. I hope they are able to stay around and hope they keep doing business. There is this thing called freedom of expression. I'm responding to you because I see that you have real issues and that you need some help. I hope that you get it someday and hope that you will realize that this is a big world and you are going to come across and maybe even face situations that make you uncomfortable, but I just hope that you focus on bigger issues rather than these little ones.
Oh by the way.. you may not want your kids to ever visit Europe. They have these things called Nudist beaches and it may put trauma to them. You wouldn't want that. Oh yes! And you may not want them to learn to much on European history, because they have many nude pictures. Especially in this thing they call Art. Maybe thats where pasties started..

1MadMomma..

One more thing to add. It's funny how it's the Belfair community that are so focused on the coffee stand. That suggests to me that this little town really needs to broaden their horizens and venture out into the real world. Maybe then they will realize that majority of the other cities could really care less. They really need to be a bit more cultured and open minded to real life..

Well if you are well traveled and think you are cultured enough then why attack a small business and why be so bothered about what they do? I won't try to save you.. Someday you'll come across a situation where you'll be begging to be saved. It's obvious you are so sheltered in your thinking that these poor people have to be attacked by a person like you. You know what would be so funny? If one of your kids were hanging out with them right now. Yes, everyone has a right to their opinion.. thats fine, but when they are stupid comments like yours then people have a right to correct you. Especially if its a person with a small mind.

Ladyjoe,
Please tell me what is cultured about a bunch of girls in pasties? I would venture to say that an education makes one more cultured than donning a pastie and a G-string.

Again, this guy was making a joke and got free publicity out of it. I am sure it didn't hurt his business one iota.

Tang,
This is not Florida...although, it came close to feeling like Florida the last couple of days.

Dubs, I do beg to differ. You are correct that you can't see through the windows, but I got a pretty good eye full from the street when the girl leaned out of the window to hand a coffee down to a small lowered vehicle at one of these stands. Now I don't have a problem looking at that kind of thing myself. As a parent though, I expect to be able to choose when and how I explain and expose my child to more adult oriented topics. I do not wish some "sexpresso barista" to make that decision for me by making such things openly visible to the public. It should be shielded so that it can only be viewed by the adult aged drive up patron.

Punkinhead, no it's not Florida (thank goodness) but my point remains the same. If you want to keep it local, I have seen some pretty skimpy outfits at horseshoe lake.

1madmomma, I wouldn't say your views are stupid, I think that would be rude and uncalled for. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and just because they disagree that doesn't make them stupid. But just because you live in a community doesn't mean you get to dictate what others activities are. If we want to start going down that road I can think of a lot of other organizations that have caused more strife and problems than women in pasties and panties throughout history. But just because I disagree with them doesn't mean we should shut them down.

Tang...
With respect... I do get to take action in my community. That may or may not bring about my desired result. But if I want change and don't fight for it I have no right to complain. Bars once allowed smoking... people wanted change... fought for change and no there's no smoking in bars. They weren't trying to shut the bars down.. they disagreed with a practice..I don't want the coffee shops shut down but I do disagree with their sales gimmick.

well, i just hope you open your mind more because there might be a day where your kids end up working in one of those establishments and you won't have the power to change that. wouldn't that be funny.. i am just so sick of people trying to control what other people want to do. this is a free country and if people don't like what other people are doing then they should just stay away from it. it's people like you that make other people have to live there lives the way "you" want them to. I just hate when people shove their agenda down there throats. If you want to control the way people live or do things then live in China or something.

Ladyjoe...
It seems you have a problem with Democracy. All through the history of this great nation people have used their voice and their vote to regulate the behaviors and activities of others. It is the American way. I am no more guilty of trying to shove my views down your throat than you are. If you don't like the practice of democracy in this country feel free to leave.

Posted by Tang on August 19, 2008 at 12:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

1MadMomma, your example of smoking in bars is a good comparison. It was a health hazard to those around them. The way these ladies dress isn't a health hazard. You, by all means, have a right to disagree with the "sales gimmick" but that doesn't mean they shouldn't do it.

I also disagree that regulating the behavior and activities of others is the American way. In fact quite the opposite. That is a characteristic of an oppressive communist society. The concept of our democracy includes a system of checks and balances that hopefully stops the will of a majority if it conflicts with the rights of a minority, for example civil rights. Freedom is what our county is about, not moral majority. If something doesn't directly affect you it should be live and let live.

Posted by Punkinhead on August 19, 2008 at 12:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ladyjoe,
Our freedoms did not come free...and there has to be some lines drawn. When you infringe on a person's rights, that's where the line has been crossed. No one said they want to shut the stand down...they just want the owner to take responsibility and cover it up from the view of the general public. Put some walls up or natural barriers such as trees... I really don't think that is too much to ask...AND give fair warning to prospecting clients...just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they do not have an open mind.

Seems to me with all your ranting and telling madmom to move out of the county completely contradicts what you say about being free...

YOU are the ignorant one...not madmomma. If my child wants to live under my roof, she WILL NOT be working at some sexspresso joint. I have taught her better than that.

You talk about agendas and then spew your venom. Puhleaaze...practice what you preach!

I always find it fascinating that those that speak the most and the loudest about their rights and personal freedoms to do and think what they want unimpeded at all times, expect others with differing opinions to restrict theirs or wish harm and ill will upon them.

Punkinhead is right. No one says “close it down” , just restrict the access to the age appropriate paying customer only.

Punkinhead..

you say they should be the one making changes. Why should they have to put up trees to block themselves? why not have the people that are uncomfortable with it just look the other way? This is what bothers me.. it's the people complaining about it that expect the person they are complaining about to change. Why not drive another way or just turn your head? Nobody said they are forced to buy coffee from them or even forced to look that way. Maybe my words were a little harsh, but it drives me nuts that people that complain about little things, expect the majority to change for them.
For example.. I'm happen to be a smoker. Okay, so I smoke. If you don't like it don't come near me. It should be my right as well as other smokers to smoke where they want. Why do "we" have to change for everyone else that doesn't? We don't ask you to live your lives the way we think you should. Where is the democracy in that? I'm just saying that these coffee stands have been around for a long time. The one on Ghorst has been around since I've lived here. Nobody has complained or made this a big issue until now. I just say if you don't like it then "choose" to not go there or look there. How hard is that?

Posted by ladyjoe9876 on August 19, 2008 at 2:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

1MadMomma..

I do appreciate democracy. I just get frustrated with people that think the world should change for them just because they don't like something so minor. Like I said, these coffee shops have been around for awhile now. These people may wear skimpy clothing, but honestly you walk down parts of Belfair, or even Bremerton and you see these girls wearing almost nothing. What is the difference really.. pasties is not that far from a girl wearing a slinky bikini or a bikini with a g-string. Just look the other way if you don't like it. Don't try to force your agenda down their throats and expect them to change for "you". They don't expect you to change for them do they?

If you don't like what you see just turn your head. If you have something to add to the discussion other than a personal attack then please proceed.

ladyjoe9876, I fail to see where a community discussion, with several easily achievable suggestions that would possibly lead to an acceptable compromise by both sides would be "shoving an agenda down anyone’s throat".

With respect... Democracy is represents the will of the people. That would mean the majority unless it can be proved than constitutional rights are being violated. I happen to feel that having pasties and panties in an open public forum does directly affect me. Therefore I am vocal in my opposition. You are right that smoking is a health hazard. This state also outlawed smoking in cigar bars, smoke shops and private clubs even though in many instances all the employees smoked or would have been willing to sign a waiver of liability. The state told these people what they could do with their own business. People could have easily done as you suggested and not go there... live and let live. But the majority of voters wanted them to be smoke free and our law makers listened to them. Democracy at it's finest.

Seems to me that these days the majority of people are now punished due to the opinions or actions of a few. Yet the majority who now suffer don't jump on their high horse and preach how it is unfair to rest of us now. We find hobbies, entertainment or other constructive activities to keep ourselves preoccupied. Then whining about other people is a hobby for some.

After watching this story (below) on KIRO News 7 this morning about a bikini coffee stand in Parkland. I can see that the stands themselves will be the cause of their own extinction.

"A man dressed in woman’s underwear and exposing himself drove up to a Parkland espresso stand three times before one of the baristas threw a cup of boiling water at him, said the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office."

Partially clad Barista’s will behave badly when harassed by customers nudity, causing them to inflict physical harm thus assault on would be customers, owners will be sued by customers for said assault and stands will close because profits will be tied up in legal costs.

Smidtracing...

Just checked out the report. Thanks for posting. I know you would agree that the girls shouldn't be harrassed that way. However.. I wonder why the barista didn't just call 911? Now ofcourse the guy should be charged for his crimes but there could be charges filed against the barista for assault and possibly a civil suit to pay for needed medical care.

yes...because the pervert exposing himself to these people had nothing to do with this.

Posted by smidtracing on August 21, 2008 at 9:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Tang, it does not matter who started it or which party could be considered perverted...if you commit a chargeable offense then you should be charged and there is a possibility you or the establishment will be sued for any damages. The customer should not have been exposing himself or harassing the girls, and the girls should have called 911 and not committed assault upon the customer.

Posted by ladyjoe9876 on August 21, 2008 at 9:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

yes, the girl should've called 911, but it is human to do what first comes to mind. Any girl would be shocked and react first before calling the cops. All the stands need to do is have a surveillance camera on the stands so they have proof of why the coffee was thrown at them.

Posted by Tang on August 22, 2008 at 9:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

OK, calling 911 would have been a good idea but at the same time waiting for a cop to show up instead of making sure you are protecting yourself isn't always the best route to go either. It does indeed matter who started it since it goes to what can be considered self defense. I wasn't there so don't know the exact circumstance but I can see a scenario where I think it would be better to do what you have to to get rid of a creep and than call the cops.

Besides the last time a barista around here was being harassed and called the cops she was given a hard time for doing so.

I have NO SYMPATHY for these Baristas that were being harrassed. It was only a matter of time and it's not like we haven't pointed this out all along. Don't get me wrong...I don't feel sorry for the guy either, but the Barista that threw the coffee on the guy was stupid, just plain stupid...in fact, her fellow barista asked if she should call the police and she said "no", THEN threw the hot water on the guy. She's lucky he didn't have a gun.

As for the owners, I hope they DO get sued...it serves them right...they are responsible for the behavior of their baristas...what did they expect, only attractive normal people to show up at their window? Sorry honey, you can't pick and choose your customers...

To answer the question above- It's funny when a man wears pasties because of the reasoning behind it, it's supposed to be funny and goofy and making a point. Bravo Don! It's offensive to some when a woman does it because of her reasons, most likely to make a dollar and bring in more customers through sexual advertisement. I agree that people who don't like it shouldn't go there, but how is the average person suppose to determine which ones are nearly nude and which are not. I personally think that when you are toting small children around, it would be nice to have some warning previous to pulling up to one of them, otherwise go ahead serve nude for all I care. I once pulled up to one of these baristas unknowingly to get a coffee and my young daughter was in the backseat. The woman at the window was old and had terrible black teeth, she was clad in in a see through neglige and panties with saggy cottage cheese legs etc. My daughter shreeked and said OMG mom, there's a hooker making the coffee. Well, atleast she finally got a day job! I said and we decided to get coffee down the street.
